Fall of the Berlin Wall

Fall of the Berlin Wall

On 9th of November 1989 was the historic moment that many people, not only in Germany, celebrate each year. The peaceful revolution in the former GDR (East Germany) made it possible, and the Berlin Wall, the symbol of the separation of the two German states, fell. The Brandenburg Gate is for many the symbol that even the impossible can become reality.

Some words to the 11/9/2022

The fall of the Berlin Wall, a peaceful revolution, is one of the great miracles of this world, and of our time. Time has also been important in this. It would have been impossible months before, and months later, perhaps, as we see today in Ukraine. It was the will of a people who took to the streets, demonstrated and chanted "We are the people" over and over again. It was courageous people in East Germany, and it was also the world that watched, reported again and again, noticed, and made it impossible for the leadership clique and also the Russians to intervene. So the tanks stayed in the barracks at that time.

It would not have been possible without the courage of the people. And also by the courage of the Poles, their trade union, Hungary, who had opened the border, and many Eastern Europeans, who had gone on the streets before, and prepared all this.

Courageous people who took to the streets. What is courage? Courage is when you overcome your fear. It is not the absence of fear. That would be stupid.

But today, because of that, something else is important. Many people are afraid again. Yes, the war in Ukraine, there too people sought freedom and democracy, and Russians do not want to allow it. The difference in people's desire is not great, but we see how differently it can turn out. We must not look away, not get tired, not be afraid. Because fear is what the Putins of the world use to oppress us.

So, unfortunately, tanks belonged and belong to freedom. They stand on the right side of the wall for peace, and as a threat to anyone who fears our freedom and wants to end our way of life. And so, quite deliberately, a European tank and an American tank stand side by side in this square tonight.

And fear divides us. Something else is happening today. The midterm elections in the United States. Fear divides us, even a Trump knows that, and he uses that fear to divide a people and to divide irreconcilably, to push back democracy. So it may be a black day today. And you see the result again in the oppression of women, the abortion laws that again discriminate against women, and in the mendacity that a maybe future senator pressured two women to have abortions, not to have to pay later and not to jeopardize his career, but now is for a ban on abortion. We German women say to it only: "Nobody decides about our body!".

Baraye

It's happening again today that people are taking to the streets. And again it is also about women and oppression. It is not a wall of concrete, but a wall of religion and culture. Actually in a country, with an breath-taken awesome history and culture. Iran was an open-minded country with a wonderful and impressive culture before the mullahs seized power.  People in Iran are risking their lives and demonstrating for freedom, equal rights. For women to be allowed to study, to travel, to go out, to drive without the permission of men. Actually all normal things for us. For a decent life. And if we don't look and raise our voices with these brave women, many will die.  If we don't see the faces, and remember, this wall will come to our countries too.

A song symbolizes this resistance, and we should all look for it to follow the lyrics.

And so we must never stop taking to the streets, watching, standing up for our freedom and our rights. So that this world remains colorful. So that we can continue to live in democracies, all have the same rights and opportunities, and it doesn't matter where we were born, and no girl should cry and regret not being born a boy. So abortion rights in the U.S. are not that far removed from the demonstrations in Iran. Because that's how it starts.
