Peep: beneath the surface, the rules get a little more interesting.

Something has changed beneath the Sunshine Lagoon.

The water is quiet. The light filters down through the surface. Strange colors shimmer between the rocks, and somewhere in the deep, someone is waiting.

Tonight, we leave the beach behind and descend Under the Lagoon for a magical Mermaid event.

Bring your most imaginative aquatic creation. Mermaid tails, sea queens, ocean spirits, sirens, sailors, underwater creatures, pearls, shells, flowing hair, glowing accessories and anything else your Second Life imagination can invent.

Don't just dress for the ocean.

Become part of it.

The surface world has always believed it knows what lies beneath the water.

It doesn't.

Tonight, we're going below.

Under the Lagoon becomes a completely different world as the Mermaid event begins. Forget the beach chairs and sunny shoreline for a while. Down here, the light becomes blue and mysterious, the plants sway with the current, and every shadow seems to have a story.

This is where your imagination gets to take over.

A Mermaid outfit can be as simple or elaborate as you want. Start with the obvious transformation: a beautiful tail. Then forget the obvious transformation and build a character around it.

Perhaps you're a classic sea princess with shimmering scales, long flowing hair, pearls and delicate shells. Maybe you're an ancient ocean queen wearing treasures gathered from shipwrecks. Or perhaps you're something far stranger, a creature from a forgotten underwater kingdom that humans have never discovered.

Second Life gives you an enormous playground here.

Glowing skin. Fantasy eyes. Bioluminescent accessories. Coral crowns. Shell jewelry. Flowing fabrics. Floating particles. Seaweed-inspired details. Strange underwater companions. Anything that makes your avatar look as though they truly belong beneath the waves.

And don't forget the sailors.

Every good ocean story needs someone who wandered too far from shore.

Perhaps your avatar is an explorer who accidentally discovered the underwater kingdom. Perhaps you're a mysterious visitor invited to a secret mermaid gathering. Maybe you're the captain of a ship that never quite made it home.

The fun begins when the characters meet.

Use the location for photographs. Underwater environments can create spectacular Second Life snapshots because the scenery itself becomes part of the fantasy. Position yourself among coral, rocks, plants and glowing elements. Let the tail, hair and accessories move with the environment.

And play with scale.

A tiny fairy-like sea creature beside an enormous underwater throne. A regal mermaid overlooking the lagoon. A group of friends gathered around a sunken treasure chest. A mysterious silhouette disappearing into the blue.

Suddenly, you're not attending a party.

You're inside a story.

As the music carries through the underwater world, let your character evolve. Start elegant. Become playful. Find another creature. Invent an underwater rivalry. Discover a secret treasure. Pose like royalty.

And when the official event eventually ends, don't assume the sea creatures are going back to bed.

The After-Party is where the atmosphere can become darker, flirtier and a little less innocent. The underwater world has plenty of hidden corners, after all.

Just remember one thing:

If something smiles at you from the darkness, smile back carefully.
